Booktok Controversy: Audra Winter, What Happened?
Keerthana Raghavendra.
Over the past few months, an author has been mentioned, that everyone might have seen or heard of. The author of the work, ‘The Age of Scorpias’, Audra Winter. I first heard of Audra Winter when her content came up around the middle of 2025. After a few scrolls, I found people discussing Audra, and later Audra’s response to the videos. The Age of Scorpius, is a YA fantasy, exploring the concept of Zodics, and a world where it determines your destiny. The novel follows the main character Rieka, and how she uncovers a historical conspiracy in her world.
This article will briefly go over the situation of the last few months. No hate is directed towards the author or her work.
How it started
Audra Winter started posting on TikTok early 2021, about the book she had been working on, The Age of Scorpius. She had worked on the book for 10 years – since the age of 12. Her content followed the pattern of her writing journey, worldbuilding, the struggles of being an indie writer, as well as her goals for when her book might be published. Audra frequently uploaded videos, with a few even gaining up to 2.9 million views. This built up hype and encouragement for her book as well as announcing a release date for late June 2025, over the next 5 years. The book gained over thousands of pre-orders, with a lot of hype despite it being a debut book. This was believed to be an immediate success, with Audra already making special editions of her book. She had built a favorable image for herself, making her a recognized figure in the writing community.
So, what happened?
Audra had huge support and a growing follower account, so what happened? The problems started right after readers had received their copy of her book. Readers who had read or even listened to her work, had claimed that the writing had many issues, such as the sentences being ‘unedited’ or repetitive, and were convinced that no proof reading had been done beforehand. The problem was that the community was confident that the work would be successful, as Audra’s content intensified the expectations. Showing her journey, especially on how she would have to reword, rewrote the majority of time to get to where her book was now. Discussions and videos started going up on social media sites, such as Reddit, Youtube, Instagram and Tiktok. Not long after, Audra would reply to the reviews with explanations. However, it only backlashed more since the viewers would claim that her explanations were mostly defensiveness, as she would try to contradict the reviews in her videos, and give reasons to why her novel was the way it was. When discussions were posted online about grammar errors and issues with sentence structure, Audra would reply that she’d hired ‘the editor of The Hunger Games’, and therefore, it was unlikely that the novel was of poor quality. These types of arguments from both the community and Audra had continued for weeks. Audra eventually said she had learned from her mistakes, and that she will be reworking the entire novel before republishing it at a later date.
Conclusion
The whole situation involving Audra Winter and The Age of Scorpius shows how strongly social media platforms can influence public expectations and reactions. What once began as a solid platform of support can quickly shift into controversial decisions after release.
